GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's early season road swing against the Southeastern Conference continues on Monday when the Paladins take on AP 19th-ranked Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium in a 7:00 p.m. ET (6:00 CT) contest.
The game will be televised via the SEC Network and live stats provided thru StatBroadcast, with links to both available on the Furman women's basketball schedule page on FurmanPaladins.com.
The Paladins (1-1) opened the season with a 85-27 home victory over North Greenville before suffering a 91-45 defeat at Georgia on Thursday. The Commodores (1-0) tipped off their season last Monday in Paris, France, where they downed California, 74-65.
Furman shot just 23.8 percent (15x63) from the field and committed 26 turnovers in the loss to Georgia that saw no Paladin reach double figure points.
Furman and Vanderbilt last met on the hardwood early in the 2019-20 season in a contest the Commodores won, 74-46, in Nashville. The two-game series got its start with a 68-51 Vanderbilt win in Nashville during the 2007-08 season.
Led by third-year head coach
Pierre Curtis, who served 10 seasons as a Paladin assistant coach before being given the program's reins in the spring of 2023, Furman boasts a young squad this year composed of three juniors, eight sophomores, and three freshmen. The Paladins lost all five starters, including All-SoCon guard Tate (Walters) Lash (now playing at Northwestern) off last year's squad that posted a 16-16 record.
Sophomore forward
Clare Coyle (10.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg), a preseason second team All-Southern selection, is the squad's leader. She is joined a pair of sophomore guards —
Raina McGowens (11.0 ppg, 6;0 rpg) and point guard
Chantelle Stuart (6.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 10 ast.). Sophomore guard
Alyssa Ervin, a transfer from Elon, is contributing 10.0 ppg, and 3.0 rpg in the early going.
Vanderbilt represents the second of three SEC foes on Furman's season schedule. The Paladins play at Florida on Dec. 28.
Furman returns home to newly renovated Timmons Arena to take on Georgia State on Thursday and Campbell on Sunday.
