GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Makiah Asidanya converted three free throws over the final 19 seconds of play to help UNCG hold off Furman, 55-51, in Southern Conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening in Fleming Gymnasium.
The win was the seventh straight for UNCG (18-6, 9-1 SoCon), which led 52-45 with three minutes to go before Furman (13-12, 3-6 SoCon) got three consecutive baskets from freshman guard
Chantelle Stuart — the final one with 1:19 to go — to pull the Paladins to within 52-51.
After both teams suffered turnovers on their next possessions, Asidanya was fouled and sent to the line, where she converted one of two chances with 19 seconds on the clock. Following a timeout, Furman's
Tate Walters drove across the lane, but her shot attempt in heavy traffic wouldn't fall, and the Spartans' Khalis Cain claimed the rebound. Asidanya drew another foul on the possession and sank a pair of free throws with six seconds to go to decide the contest.
UNCG used a strong third quarter to break out from a 26-26 halftime deadlock, draining 9-of-13 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, to take a 44-30 lead at one point before
Sydney Ryan bottomed out Furman's lone 3-pointer of the contest to pull Furman to within 48-39 heading to the fourth quarter.
Stuart, coming off a season high 14-point, nine-assist, eight-rebound performance in last Saturday's 93-88 double overtime win over Wofford, finished with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Kate Johnson was the only other Paladin to register double figures with 10 points.
Nya Smith topped UNCG with 12 points, and Jaila Lee finished with 11.
The Spartans outscored the Paladins 15-3 from 3-point range, connecting on 5-of-11 treys.
The two teams shot exactly 38.9 percent from the field, with both hitting on 21-of-54 shots, and battled to a near deadlock in the boards, with UNCG getting 14 caroms from Cain. Freshman
Clare Coyle paced Furman with eight rebounds.
Furman plays at Western Carolina on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. game.
