ELON, N.C. -- No. 37 Furman stymied Elon, 4-1, Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
The Paladins swept the doubles matches to picked up the opening point. Seniors Ellie Schulson and Sara Snyder, who rank 58th in this week's national poll, defeated Miray Konar and Helen Sarikulaya, 6-4, at number one, and senior Jess Dawson and sophomore Ellie Schulson, who rank 64th nationally, won the final three games to slip past Mariana Reding and Simone Bergeron, 7-5, at flight two. At flight three, seniors Grace Thomas and Alexa Griffith took four of the last five games, holding off Lisa Kranec and Heidi Bulger, 6-4.
Furman pushed the advantage to 2-0 after Snyder defeated Bergeron, 6-3, 6-1, at number one, then the Phoenix scored at flight six where Kranec defeated Thomas, 6-2, 6-3. The Paladins answered with wins at flights three and four for the victory. Dawson recorded a 7-6(7), 6-2 advantage over Bulger at flight three, then minutes later Schulson hung on to beat Reding, 6-2, 7-6(4), at number four.
The matches at flights two and five were unfinished. Sarikulaya took set one, 7-5, at number two, before senior Marissa Pennings answered with a 6-0 win in set two. Pennings led the third set, 1-0. At number five, Hitchcock led Madison Cordisco, 7-5, 3-2, when the match was clinched.
The Paladins (6-2) open SoCon play with two home matches this week. Furman will entertain Western Carolina Tuesday at 3 p.m. then take on UNC Greensboro Thursday at 3 p.m.
