CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team started off Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep of The Citadel Bulldogs at Earle Tennis Center.
The victory, Furman's 59
th all-time over The Citadel, improves it to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SoCon. The Bulldogs drop to 1-4 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.
The Paladins swept their way through doubles competition by capturing all three matches to take the early 1-0 lead. Playing together for the first time this season,
Elijah Poritzky and
John Rado topped Noah Van Dyke and Reece Beckendorf, 6-4, at No. 1. Furman also picked up a pair of 6-0 triumphs in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. In the No. 2 contest,
Cole Burnam and
Connor Laymon defeated Ted Bagwell and Tucker Hendrix.
Nicolas Dispas and
Nico Snyder won at No. 3 versus Bradey Minnich and Nick Stroumpis.
Furman continued its momentum into singles play by winning all six matches to secure the 7-0 victory. Poritzky won his No. 1 match over Van Dyke, 6-3, 6-1, and
Theophile Joly earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Bagwell at No. 2. Rado, playing at No. 3, registered a 6-2, 7-5 win over Minnich. Dispas won, 6-1, 6-2 versus Stroumpis in the No. 4 contest, while
Walker Allen secured a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 against Beckendorf. In the No. 6 match, Laymon defeated Anthony Osipov, 6-1, 6-0.
The Paladins play their first home matches of the season next weekend, February 15-16, hosting Georgia State and Gardner-Webb at Mickel Tennis Center.
