Buzelis’ Late Goal Sends Furman Past Queens (N.C.), 13-12

Buzelis, Roser Lead Paladins With Five Goals Apiece

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sofija Buzelis' goal with 22 seconds remaining lifted the Furman women's lacrosse team past the Queens (N.C.) Royals, 13-12, in the Paladins' non-conference finale Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium.

Furman heads into its Big South opener next Wednesday with a 6-2 overall record. With the loss, Queens (N.C.) drops to 3-7 on the season.

The Paladins trailed 12-9 with 5:55 remaining in the contest when Karsyn Sadler gave the Royals a three-goal advantage with her first of the contest. Furman would then hold Queens (N.C.) without a goal for the rest of the game while ending on a 4-0 run. Lily Toole and Paige Harman cut the Paladins' deficit to 12-11 before Buzelis tied the score at 12-12 with 2:17 left off Harman's assist.

Buzelis and Harman teamed up for the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining in the game to give Furman its best start through eight games in program history.

Toole and Buzelis scored the game's opening two goals before the Royals answered with five straight. Queens (N.C.) outscored the Paladins 6-1 in the second quarter to hold an 8-3 lead at halftime.

Furman went on a 4-1 run during the third quarter and trimmed its deficit down to 10-9 at the 8:29 mark of the third quarter on Roser's fifth goal of the contest. The Royals answered with back-to-back goals from Sadler and Anna Bednarz to go ahead 12-9 less than three minutes later.

Buzelis and Roser paced the Paladins offensively with five goals apiece while Lilly Pons dished out a career high three assists. Buzelis added a game high five draws along with Harman while picking up two ground balls. Molly Faul tied her season high of three ground balls and four different players caused two turnovers each.

Goalie Sailor Henderson got the start in goal and finished with two saves and one ground ball. Madigan Brewer came on in relief of Henderson right before halftime and picked up the win after holding Queens (N.C.) scoreless over the final 5:54.

The Royals saw five players score two goals and three have one assist. Goalie Devan Maready finished with five saves and three ground balls.

Furman outshot Queens (N.C.), 30-17, while holding a 17-14 advantage in ground balls and 18-11 in draws. The Paladins forced the Royals into 19 turnovers.

Furman opens Big South Conference play next Wednesday, March 26 when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the action on www.furmanpaladins.com via live stats.
