GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 36th-ranked Furman women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision on Senior Day Friday to No. 47 Charlotte at Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.
The Paladins fall to 13-3 on the season while Charlotte improves to 16-3 overall.
Furman won the bottom two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Jess Dawson and Macy Hitchcock won 6-1 over Prisca Abbas and Lucia Aranda at flight two before Amira Badawi and Sarah Suchankova evened things at flight one with a 6-2 win against Ellie Schulson and Sara Snyder. In the flight three contest, Alexa Griffith and Marissa Pennings closed things out with a 6-4 victory against Shona Nakano and Ni Xi to clinch the point.
The 49ers swept all four completed singles matches to claim the 4-1 victory. In the flight two match, Suchankova topped Dawson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, and Abbas followed at flight five with a 6-1, 7-6(5) win over Schulson. At flight four, Aranda defeated Hitchcock in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. Xi clinched the match for Charlotte at flight one with her 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory versus Snyder.
The Paladins were leading in the two unfinished matches at flights three and six. Pennings held a 7-6(4), 3-2 lead versus Badawi at flight three while Grace Thomas led Nakano in the third set at flight six, 6-1, 5-7, 4-2.
Prior to Friday's match, Furman held its Senior Day ceremony honoring Dawson, Griffith, Pennings, Schulson, Snyder, and Thomas.
The Paladins will entertain Mercer Tuesday at 3 p.m.
