FORT MYERS, FLA. – The Furman men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 non-conference decision to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles Tuesday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Furman drops to 5-6 on the season while Florida Gulf Coast improves to 4-10 overall.
The Paladins clinched the doubles point for the third consecutive match after claiming two out of the three matches. The Eagles opened by winning at No. 1 before
Walker Allen and
Sam Fancutt won their second straight match at No. 3 with a 6-4 triumph over Stavros Hadjivarnava and Harry Michalowski.
Nicolas Dispas and
Nico Snyder secured the point for Furman with their team leading seventh victory of the year after rallying from behind to defeat Christopher Smith and Guglielmo Stefanacci, 7-5.
Florida Gulf Coast would go on to clinch the match after winning five straight singles contests at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6. Pablo Paternostro and Jonathan Baron put FGCU ahead 2-1 following their victories at No. 4 and No. 2, respectively. Paternostro topped
Walker Allen, 6-2, 6-1, and Baron defeated
John Rado, 6-4, 6-2. Stefanacci won, 6-3, 6-3, over
Nicolas Dispas at No. 3 before Hadjivarnava captured the match for the Eagles with his 7-6(7), 7-5 win versus Snyder at No. 6. In the No. 1 match, Hugo Magnusson closed things out for Florida Gulf Coast holding off
Theophile Joly in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Connor Laymon, playing at No. 5, got the Paladins on the board in singles with his three-set triumph against Smith. The senior from Delray Beach, Fla., took the opening set, 6-4, before Smith captured the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6(0). Laymon then held off Smith in the third set, 7-5, to record his fourth win of the season.
Despite not playing in Tuesday's matchup, senior
Elijah Poritzky entered the ITA Division I Men's Tennis rankings for the first time this season. The Palma de Mallorca, Spain, native presently sits 119
th nationally and is the only Southern Conference player ranked this week.
Furman concludes its Florida road swing traveling to No. 36 South Florida. The match was originally scheduled for tomorrow afternoon but has been rescheduled to Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
