ASHEVILLE, N.C. --
Jada Session scored 13 points and claimed 11 rebounds, including five in a rugged fourth quarter, to help Furman defeat East Tennessee State, 64-58, in women's Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinal round action Thursday afternoon at Harrah's Cherokee Center.
The victory propels Furman (16-15), the tournament's No.6 seed, into a 1:15 p.m. Friday semifinal round matchup against No. 2 seed Chattanooga, which knocked off Mercer, 68-47, in earlier quarterfinal action.
Furman, which was swept in the regular season by ETSU (17-13), the tournament's No. 3 seed, improved to 9-1 versus the Buccaneers in SoCon Tournament play.
Session scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half, and her jump shot with 6:58 in the third quarter contributed in a 9-0 run that broke a 34-34 tie and gave Furman a 43-34 lead following a
Clare Coyle layup with 4:55 remaining in the period.
Two Session baskets the rest of the quarter twice pushed Furman's lead to six points, and her defensive rebound with eight seconds on the period clock set up an outlet pass to
Jaelyn Acker, who fired a pass down court to
Sydney Ryan, who stripped the net for a period ending 3-pointer and a 55-48 Paladin advantage .
Tate Walters opened the fourth quarter with a short jumper in the paint to extend Furman's lead to 57-48, and the graduate guard converted the Paladins' final basket of the game, on a steal off an inbounds play with 4:20 remaining, to give Furman a 61-52 advantage.
ETSU scored the next six points to cut Furman's lead to 61-58 on a Courtney Moore layup with 1:41 to go.
It remained a three-point game until Paladin freshman guard
Raina McGowens rolled in the second of two free throws with 11 seconds on the clock to make it 62-58. Â Session closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws with three seconds to go.
Session's double-double was her fifth of the season and came after she missed the season's first 10 games while recovering from an injury. Â Her 11 caroms upped her career tally to 667 and into 10th place on Furman's career ledger.
Walters finished with 11 points, the only other Paladin in double figures.
Furman shot 50.0 percent from the field, hitting on 24-of-48 attempts after suffering through a 31.4 percent shooting performance in last Saturday's, 62-50, regular season finale loss to the Buccaneers in Johnson City.
Meghan Downing led ETSU with 16 points, and Kendall Folley finished with 15.
Furman's bench proved pivotal, outscoring ETSU's reserves 27-9, led by
Jaelyn Acker with nine points,
Chantelle Stuart with eight points, and
Clare Coyle with six points.
