GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Junior Colton Kempney and sophomore Chris Knight won the men's 3,000m Steeplechase and 1,500m, respectively, to lead the Furman track and field teams Friday at the Asheville Bulldog Invite at the Karl Straus Track in Asheville, N.C., while junior Jenna Mulhern and senior Nicole Matysik posted strong finishes to pace the Paladin women at the at the Duke Invitational at Morris Williams Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Kempney, a native of Castorland, N.Y., posted a time of 9:24.16 to take gold in the Steeplechase, and Knight, who hails from Signal Mountain, Tenn., recorded a personal-best time of 3:47.79 in the 1,500m to lead a group of seven Paladins who finished among the top 14 in the event. Three additional Furman athletes registered PRs in the 1,500m, including freshman Tripp Roemer, who placed fifth at 3:53.88, and sophomore Owen Shifflett, who finished seventh at 3:54.77. Senior Casey Burr took ninth place with a personal-best time of 3:59.76.
Also in Asheville, senior Madelynne Cadeau placed third in the women's 1,500m with a time of 4:36.68.
At Duke, Mulhern was paced by freshman Nysa Males to an eighth-place finish in the 5,000m, crossing the line in 16:43.99. Senior Nicole Matysik turned in a time of 4:22.55 to take 17th place in the 1,500m, and junior Carly Wilkes turned in a time of 4:24.98 for 21st place in the event.
Both meets continue on Saturday.
