GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 22-9 victory over the Winthrop Eagles at Paladin Stadium to clinch a share of the program's first-ever Big South Regular Season Championship.
Furman claimed its third regular season title in program history and first since 2021. The Paladins won the Southern Conference Regular Season Championship outright in 2021 and earned a share of the league crown in 2019.
Furman set new school records for both wins and home wins in a season, improving to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the Big South. The Paladins also finished the regular season undefeated at home with a 9-0 mark. With the loss, Winthrop dropped to 6-10 on the year and 4-4 in conference play.
Furman honored its six-member senior class prior to opening draw recognizing
Sofija Buzelis,
Molly Faul,
Andrea Fisher,
Paige Harman,
Anna Roser, and
Audrey Smith.
Ten different Paladins scored in the victory led by Roser's eight points on five goals and three assists.
Lily Toole also finished with five goals while Buzelis and Harman both had four points. Buzelis totaled three goals and an assist and Harman recorded one goal and three assists. Buzelis became Furman's single-season draws leader on Saturday after compiling seven along with Harman.
Skylar Hilmer tied her career high of three goals.
Lilly Dyer picked up a career high four ground balls and Fisher caused two turnovers.
Goalies
Madigan Brewer and
Sailor Henderson combined for seven saves. Brewer improved to 10-0 in goal after contributing two ground balls.
Scarlet Cifarelli paced the Eagles offensively with four points on two goals and two assists. In goal, Mikaylah Lindsay and Emma Calhoun combined for 10 saves.
The Paladins limited Winthrop to just four goals in the first half as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead after one quarter and led 15-4 at halftime. The Eagles cut Furman's lead to 4-2 with 2:19 to go in the first quarter before the Paladins responded by scoring 11 of the final 13 goals of the half. Buzelis sent Furman into halftime leading by 11 following her goal off Harman's assist with 45 seconds left before intermission.
Both teams scored three times in the third quarter and the Paladins outscored Winthrop, 4-1, over the last 9:19 of the contest.
Reeve Goldstein's first career goal sealed the 22-9 victory for Furman.
The Paladins outshot the Eagles 38-23 and held a 23-16 advantage in ground balls and 18-14 in draws. Furman forced Winthrop into 17 turnovers throughout the contest.
The 2025 Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship starts with the first round on April 29 and is being hosted by the higher seeds. The semifinals and finals are slated for May 2 and May 4 at the site of the league's number one seed.
