SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- No. 41 Furman downs Wofford, 6-1, Wednesday at the Reeves Tennis Center to maintain a firm hold on the Pinson Cup.
Bobby and Dixie Pinson, beloved friends of both the Furman and Wofford programs, have given the trophy and a generous donation in honor of the rivalry between the two schools. The trophy stays with the winning school until the winner of the next season's match is determined, and the Paladins have been awarded the trophy each year since its inception in 2005.
The Paladins (17-3, 6-0 SoCon) won two out of three doubles matches to score the opening point. Senior Jess Dawson and sophomore Macy Hitchcock blew past Grace Agster and Catherin Blouin, 6-1, at flight two, and seniors Alexa Griffith and Grace Thomas defeated Chloe Elliott and Brianna Wilbur, 6-4, at number three for the point. At flight one, the Terriers' Breda Brenna and Lily Woods held off seniors Ellie Schulson and Sara Snyder, 7-6(3).
In singles action, Furman won five of six matches, all in straight sets. Snyder topped Brennan, 6-0, 6-4, in the number one contest, and Dawson recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wilbur at flight two. At number three, senior Marissa Pennings held off Woods, 7-5, 6-3, and at flight four, Schulson beat Blouin, 7-5, 6-3. Hitchcock posted a 7-6(6), 6-0 advantage versus Agster at flight five.
Wofford (15-3, 4-2) won at flight six, with Elliott topping Griffith, 6-1, 6-3.
Furman will entertain ETSU Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C., in a showdown between the SoCon's two undefeated teams to determine the regular season champion and the SoCon tournament's number one seed.
