Second Half Goals Send Furman Past Charleston Southern On Senior Day, 2-0

Paladins Claim Third Straight Victory

Greenville, S.C. – Graduate student Emma Sexton netted a pair of second half goals to send Furman past Charleston Southern, 2-0, in non-conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The Senior Day victory, Furman's third straight win, improved the Paladins to 3-1-0 on the season while the Buccaneers slid to 0-2-1.

With the match scoreless after 59 minutes, Jaleah Simmons stole an outlet pass several yards outside the box and fed a pass to Sexton, who was unmarked near the penalty spot. The Fort Mill, S.C., native calmly finished into the left-hand side of the net with her right foot at the 59:02 mark to record her first goal as a Paladin.

Just over two minutes after scoring the goal that broke the deadlock, Sexton doubled the lead. Furman won a corner kick and Ava King served the set piece inside the six-yard box for Sexton to nod into the right-hand corner at 61:13 to increase the margin to 2-0.

"It was great to see all 10 seniors start on Senior Day," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "They helped us get the win, our second straight shutout, and make it three wins from this season-opening four-game homestand. We are continuing to grow and develop as a team, but it's always good to get wins as we go through the early season growth."

Sophomore Reese DeJong helped the Paladins to their second shutout of the weekend with three saves in her 90 minutes in goal, including a diving deflection on Rowyn Serne's first half strike. Avery Mason also stopped three shots for Charleston Southern.

Furman managed a 10-7 advantage in total shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on target.

The Paladins take to the road on Thursday night to face the Presbyterian Blue Hose. Kickoff is Clinton, S.C., is set for 7 p.m.
