No. 20 Furman Shoots Past North Greenville In Home Opener, 6-2

Paladins Host No. 8 Duke, Retire Clint Dempsey's Jersey At 6 P.M. Sunday

Greenville, S.C. – Six different Paladins netted goals as No. 20 Furman claimed a 6-2 victory over North Greenville in non-conference men's soccer Thursday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.
 
The four-goal victory helped the Paladins (2-0-1) remain unbeaten on the season entering Sunday's home tilt versus No. 8 Duke.
 
"It's always great to get a win, especially here at home in front of a good crowd," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We had six different players scores goals and several who got their first career goal. We look forward to Sunday and hope everyone will come out to support us against Duke and to celebrate Clint Dempsey."
 
Diego Hernandez opened the scoring from close range on an assist from Luke Munson in the 22nd minute before North Greenville's Enrico Onzi evened the match off assists from Lucas Di Pasquale and Emilio Galeas on a set piece in the 23rd minute. Ryan Reid slipped a shot into the left-hand corner off a pass from Wilfer Bustamante in the 31st minute to put the Paladins in front for good and Wesley Siegel doubled the advantage in the 39th minute off an assist from Hernandez.
 
Furman freshman Gianluca Rizzo ripped a shot from outside the box and into the left side of the net at the 80:42 mark to secure his first career goal and up the margin to 4-1. Landon Hill made it 5-1 by nodding a Ben Boxall cross inside the far post from inside the six-yard box at 82:31 and Caleb Johnson added Furman's sixth score of the night in the 85thminute by stripping the ball from a North Greenville defender and slotting a shot into the corner from the middle of the box.
 
The Trailblazers' Quentin Gray added a consolation goal at 88:18 when he redirected a long cross past goalkeeper Andrew Laplaca at the right post for the final 6-2 scoreline.
 
Max Miller, making his first career start in goal for Furman, registered four saves in almost 81 minutes of action to earn the victory. Ricardo Marques and Collin Dahlmann totaled two saves apiece for North Greenville.
 
Furman finished with a 22-7 advantage in total shots and 10-6 margin in shots on goal.
 
The Paladins continue their homestand on Sunday when they host No. 8 Duke at Stone Stadium. Prior to the match, Furman will retire soccer legend and former Paladin Clint Dempsey's No. 2 jersey. Admission to the match is free and the first 250 fans receive a Clint Dempsey t-shirt.
