Furman Ties Mercer In SoCon Opener, 2-2

Paladins Run Unbeaten Streak To Eight Matches

Greenville, S.C. – Furman and Mercer fought to a 2-2 draw in the Southern Conference women's soccer opener for both schools Thursday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The Paladins (6-1-2, 0-0-1 SoCon) opened the scoring in the seventh minute as freshman Callah Dando stripped the ball from the Mercer goalkeeper and fed a pass to junior Norah Roller who fired her shot into an empty net at the 6:31 mark. Dando helped Furman double its advantage less than nine minutes later on her team-best fourth assist of the season. She curled a corner kick to the far post and junior Maddie Massie headed her attempt inside the left post from close range at the 15:02 mark for her fourth goal of the year.

Mercer (5-3-1, 0-0-1 SoCon) began its comeback just after the half hour mark. The Bears earned a penalty kick at the 31:48 mark when Furman was whistled for a foul in the box and Sydney Farr stepped up to convert her spot kick. Less than two minutes later, Furman's Reese DeJong punched a Mercer cross out of the box, but the Bears' Payton Nutzman drilled a one-time effort over DeJong at 33:19 to knot the contest at 2-2.

Furman held the Bears without a shot on goal over the final 45 minutes to salvage a point.

"Tonight was a typical Southern Conference battle," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr, who was honored in pregame ceremonies for recording his 250th career win earlier this season. "Every game in league play is going to be tightly contested and every point will have to be earned. We appreciate the large crowd and youth soccer players who came out tonight. It provided a great atmosphere for college soccer and a lot of energy."

DeJong finished with two saves for the Paladins while Lindsay Bell stopped four shots for Mercer. Furman posted a 12-8 margin in total shot attempts and 6-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Paladins continue league play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. kickoff versus VMI in Lexington, Va. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
