Campbell's First Goal Propels No. 10 Furman To Victory Against Charlotte, 1-0

Paladins Improve To 5-1-3 On The Season

Greenville, S.C. – Sophomore Trip Campbell netted his first career goal in the 82nd minute to propel 10th-ranked Furman to a 1-0 victory over Charlotte in non-conference men's soccer action Monday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The victory improved the Paladins, ranked No. 10 by Top Drawer soccer and 15th by College Soccer News and in the United Soccer Coaches poll, to 5-1-3 on the season. The 49ers slipped to 3-3-1.

With under nine minutes remaining, Luke Hutzell won a header near midfield and Wilfer Bustmante, with his first touch, struck a cross over the back line and into the path of Campbell. The Louisville, Ky., native outran the Charlotte back line, headed the bouncing ball to his feet and finished into the left-hand corner with a right-footed shot on a one-versus-one with the goalkeeper at 81:31 for the eventual winning goal.

"It's great to bounce back from the loss to Charleston and get a win against a very good Charlotte team," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "I was proud of how hard the guys worked tonight and especially proud of Trip Campbell for persevering and getting the goal."

After the match produced few opportunities with just eight total shots in the opening 45 minutes, the chances started to come for both teams in the second half. Braden Dunham tested Charlotte's Leo Stritter in the first five minutes of the second half and 49er substitute Daire McCarthy forced Furman's Ivan Horvat into a save in the 66th minute. Furman's uke Hutzell tested the goalkeeper in the 68th minute before Charlotte's Chadi Mayati and Denis Krioutchenov put Horvat to work in the 75th and 80th minutes, respectively.

Following Campbell's go-ahead score, the Paladins limited Charlotte to just one shot on target over the final 8:29 of the match. Horvat and Max Miller combined on the shutout with Horvat notching six saves. Stritter stopped four shots for the 49ers.

Furman managed a 13-12 edge in total shots while Charlotte fashioned a 6-5 margin in shots on goal.

The Paladins are idle until Tuesday, September 30, when they host the USC Upstate Spartans on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.
