Furman’s Gorman Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman sophomore middle blocker Tennyson Gorman has been named the Southern Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for matches played September 22-28, it was announced today by the league office.

Gorman, a native of Franklin, Tenn., paced the Paladins at the net last week as they opened Southern Conference play with a pair of wins over UNC Greensboro and Samford. She led the Paladins, who open league play 2-0 for the second time in three years, with 13 assisted blocks and averaged just under two blocks per set at 1.86. Offensively, Gorman tied for third on the team with 16 kills after hitting .265 overall.

Gorman totaled at least six assisted blocks in both victories highlighted by a career best seven in Furman's 3-0 sweep of Samford on September 27. The victory marked the first time since 2007 that the Paladins defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 in back-to-back matches going back to a three-set win last year in Greenville. She turned in six blocks and 10 kills on .316 hitting in the conference opener, a 3-1 road win at UNC Greensboro on September 25.

Gorman currently leads the SoCon in blocks with 68 and sits seventh in kills at 149.

Furman is back in action this week, October 2-3, hosting Mercer and The Citadel at Alley Gymnasium.
