No. 9 Furman Holds Off Davidson in Gray Griffin Memorial Match, 3-2

Paladins Run Season-Opening Unbeaten Streak To Five Matches

Greenville, S.C. – Midfielder Diego Hernandez netted a pair of first half goals and Wilfer Bustamante scored the eventual match-winner as ninth-ranked Furman held off former Southern Conference foe Davidson, 3-2, in the annual Gray Griffin Memorial Match Thursday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

With the victory, the Paladins remained unbeaten on the season at 3-0-2. Davidson suffered its second straight defeat to fall to 2-2-0.

"It's always nice to get the win and score three goals against a good opponent," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We also appreciate Al Griffin being here tonight and the opportunity to honor his son, Gray Griffin and his memory."

Tuesday's match was named in honor of former Paladin defender and United States Under-17 National Team captain, Gray Griffin, who was killed in a traffic accident in October of 2002 during his freshman year at Furman.

Hernandez struck twice in the opening half with is first goal coming off a centering pass into the middle of the box from Caleb Johnson at the 22:52 mark. The junior doubled the Paladin lead at 41:24 as Ryan Reid's pass freed Bustamante who picked out Hernandez on the left side of the box. Hernandez line his shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Lucas Beltran for his second score of the night and third of the season.

After Myles Culley's blast from the top of the box in the 83rd minute put Davidson on the board, Reid played a pass into the path of Bustamante for a one-on-one chance with the keeper and he slotted his shot into the corner at 83:43 for his third score of the year.

Nico Quanbeck fired a shot across the face of the goal and into the left-hand corner in the 88th minute to once again trim the Furman lead to 3-2, but the Paladins held the Wildcats without a chance the rest of the way to run their unbeaten streak to five matches.

Ivan Horvat returned to the Furman lineup to earn the win in goal after recording three saves. Beltran stopped two shots in the loss for Davidson.

Furman managed a 13-9 advantage in total shots while the Wildcats fashioned a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

The Paladins are back in action Tuesday evening on ACCNX when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face the seventh-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies.
