GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Alyssa Ervin scored 17 points to lead a parade of five double figure scorers, and Furman used a dominant third quarter to erase an eight-point halftime deficit en route to a 69-38 victory over Western Carolina in Southern Conference women's basketball play Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
With the victory, the fifth in the last six games for Furman (11-8, 3-1 SoCon), the Paladins extended their home winning streak over Western Carolina (3-15, 0-4 SoCon) to 14 games and improved to 16-1 in their last 17 clashes with the Catamounts.
Furman, which overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat UNC Greensboro, 69-56, on Thursday, hit on just 1-of-20 shots in the second quarter to trail 26-18 at the break before going on a 22-3 run over the first seven minutes of the third quarter for a 40-29 lead. Â Fueling the decisive frame for the Paladins was sophomore guard
Raina McGowens, who went a perfect 5-for-5 from the field for 10 of her 12 points.
Furman's defense matched its offensive outburst to start the second half, smothering the Catamounts, who made only 2-of-13 field goal attempts in third quarter.
Ervin's 17 points fronted a solid overall floor game that saw the Paladin sophomore guard contribute seven rebounds, three blocks, and a pair of assists.
McGowens was equally effective, complementing her 12 points with seven boards, three steals, and two assists.
Clare Coyle, sidelined for much of the second quarter after drawing her second foul, notched her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and game high 12 rebounds in 31 minutes of action.
Freshman
Brooklyn King, who logged a season high 24 minutes of court time, matched her season high with 10 points to go along with seven rebounds, four blocks, and three steals.
The Paladins shot 53.8 percent from the field (21x39) in the second half to finish the game at 37.0 percent. Â The Catamounts, meanwhile, struggled to just 2-for-21 shooting over the final 20 minutes and finished at 21.3 percent from the field (10x47).
Furman converted 30 Western Carolina turnovers into a 29-4 scoring differential off miscues and outscored the Catamounts in the paint by a 34-12 margin. Â Â
