Shorthanded Paladins Pull Away From UNCG, 89-66

Wilkins Pours In 27, House Adds 25 To Lead Furman

Greensboro, N.C. – Alex Wilkins scored 27 points and Tom House added 25 to lead Furman to an 89-66 road victory at UNC Greensboro Friday afternoon at Bodford Arena.

The Paladins, who played with just seven available scholarship players due to injury and illness, improved to 14-7 overall and 5-3 in the Southern Conference. UNCG slipped to 8-13 overall and 4-4 in league play.

Leading 53-52 with under 9:30 to go, Wilkins and Charles Johnston drained consecutive threes to ignite a 12-2 run that gave Furman a 67-55 advantage on Wilkins' triple with 6:17 remaining. The Spartans trimmed the margin to 69-61 with five minutes to play, but Furman used a 10-0 run to close the door. Cole Bowser buried a three from the corner and Wilkins converted on a drive to the basket before Johnston finished an alley-oop slam. Bowser delivered a two-handed flush on a breakaway before Wilkins capped the run with a 1-for-2 trip to the foul line.

The Paladin shot 66.7% in the second half and made good on 12 of their final 14 shots. Furman finished at 55.2% from the floor, including a 14-for-27 performance behind the arc, and went 11-of-12 at the charity stripe.

Wilkins and House combined to connect on 11-of-17 three-point attempts and Bowser posted his first career double-double with career-highs in points (13) and rebounds (13). Ben Vander Wal chipped in with 10 points and a career-best eight assists.

Furman outscored the Spartans 32-30 in the paint and posted a 30-27 rebounding edge. The Paladins committed just five turnovers for the game and fashioned an 11-7 edge in points off turnovers.

Justin Neely led the Spartans with 20 points and nine rebounds while KJ Younger scored 17 points and Valentino Pinedo added 10. UNCG shot 43.4% from the field but hit just 7-of-26 three-point attempts.

House connected on 5-of-6 three-point attempts in the first half to match his season-high with 17 points. The Paladins used a 9-0 run in the middle of the opening period to gain the lead and extended the margin to as many as seven points before carrying a 35-30 edge into the locker room.

Furman is idle until Thursday, January 29, when it hosts Samford in a nationally televised contest on CBS Sports Network. Tip-off at Timmons Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m.
