Furman Drops 3-1 Decision At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Cameron Reese and Rachel Reininger both finished with 15 kills Tuesday evening to give The Citadel Bulldogs at 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22) Southern Conference victory over the Furman volleyball team at McAlister Field House.

Furman drops to 8-8 overall and 2-3 in the SoCon. The win improves The Citadel to 4-13 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

Izzy Castelloe led all players with a match high 15 kills while Lauren Haynes turned in her first double-double of the season on 14 kills and 21 digs. Morgan Baldridge, Emily Navarro, and Kennedy Seekford all totaled double-doubles in the contest. Baldridge picked up her first career double-double on 20 assists and 12 digs, Seekford her first of the year on 24 digs and 10 assists, and Navarro her team leading 10th this season with 22 assists and 10 digs. Ashtan Dodson contributed 13 digs.

Reese (15 kills, 10 digs) and Greta Pleuss (38 assists, 10 digs) both compiled double-doubles for the Bulldogs. Megan Stone led the team with 18 digs.

The Citadel jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the contest after winning the opening two sets, 26-24 and 25-22. The Paladins wrapped up the first set hitting .265 as a team, but the Bulldogs tallied a .302 clip. Castelloe finished with seven kills, Baldridge seven assists, and Seekford seven digs. Furman contributed a .205 hitting percentage in the second set with Castelloe leading the team again with four kills, Navarro five assists, and Baldridge six digs.

The Paladins bounced back with a 25-20 triumph in the third set, cutting their deficit down to 2-1. Furman outhit The Citadel, .271-.200, as Haynes posted six kills and seven digs, and Navarro eight assists. With the score tied at 11-11, the Paladins recorded four of the next six points and built a 20-16 lead following a Bulldog timeout when Haynes connected on a kill. Ashley Stein later put Furman ahead by five, 23-18, after her kill. The Paladins secured the set on a ball handling error.

The Citadel captured the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set. Furman limited the Bulldogs to just .146 hitting in the frame but was held to .140. Kacie Moore led the team with four kills on .667 hitting, Baldridge and Navarro both had four assists, and Seekford added eight digs.

The Paladins wrap up their road trip this weekend, October 9-10, heading to Cullowhee, N.C., for a two-match conference series at Western Carolina.
