Furman vs. Mercer Game Notes

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's basketball team will look to half its two-game skid and complete a regular season sweep of Mercer when the Paladins travel to Macon, Ga., on Wednesday night.

The second meeting of the year between the Paladins and Bears is slated for 7 p.m. at Hawkins Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also listen to Dan Scott and Tom Van Hoy call the action on The Fan Upstate at 97.7 FM and 1330 AM in Greenville, 97.1 FM and 1490 AM in Spartanburg, and via the Audacy app. Links for the live audio and live statistics are available at FurmanPaladins.com.

Furman (16-9, 7-5 SoCon) is coming off a 67-64 home loss to UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena. The Spartans used a late first half run to gain control of the game and extended their lead to double digits before Furman trimmed the margin to one point in the final minutes. A clutch three-pointer from UNCG's Noah Norgaard and two free throws in the closing seconds from Justin Neely, who posted 24 points and 13 rebounds, helped the Spartans hold off the Paladins to earn the season split.

Cooper Bowser, playing in just his third game back from injury, tallied a team-leading 20 points for the Paladins while guard Alex Wilkins added 15 points and five assists. Furman outscored the Spartans in the paint and managed an edge on the boards, but UNCG outscored the Paladins by 15 points from behind the arc and shot over 50% from three-point range to score the victory.

Like Furman, Mercer (15-10, 7-5 SoCon) enters Wednesday night's battle for sole possession of third place in the Southern Conference standings on a two-game losing streak. The Paladins hold a 30-12 lead in the all-time series with the Bears and have won three straight meetings following a 74-72 win at Timmons Arena in the SoCon opener on December 31. Wilkins knocked down the game-winning jumper with 19.1 seconds left to secure the victory. He totaled a team-high 20 points while Asa Thomas added 19. Furman has won 21 of the last 23 meetings between the schools.
