Furman Softball Falls At Gardner-Webb, 10-2

McCoy Hits First Homer Of 2026

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Glenna McLamb hurled a one-hitter and Gardner-Webb posted a pair of four-run innings to down Furman, 10-2, in softball action Sunday afternoon at the Runnin' Bulldog Classic at Brinkley Stadium.
 
McLamb surrendered just a hit and two unearned runs in the five-inning, complete-game effort to improve to 2-0 on the season. She issued five walks and fanned six of the 22 Furman batters she faced on the day.
 
Taylor Dreher's two-run double put the Runnin' Bulldogs in from in the bottom of the second inning and Gardner-Webb (3-2) extended its lead to 6-0 with four runs in the bottom of the third despite registering only one hit in the frame. A leadoff single and two walks helped Gardner-Webb load the bases with one out in the inning. Dreher drove in a run when she reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. After pinch hitter Lily Barry drew a bases loaded walk to chase Paladin starter Taylor Miller from the game, Ly Forte worked a walk against reliever Jamison Noonan to force in a run and Jailyn Tineo lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to push the score to 6-0.
 
Katie Peeler reached third on a three-base error to open the top of the fourth inning for Furman and scored on Hope Marshburn's sacrifice fly. Christina McCoy belted her second career home run two batters later to trim the deficit to 6-2, but the roundtripper would be the Paladins only hit of the afternoon. 
 
McLamb worked around a walk to pitch a scoreless top of the fifth and the Runnin' Bulldogs' offense scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame to trigger the mercy rule. Three straight batters reached base two start the inning, including an RBI double from Forte. After Noonan retired the next two batters, Caitlin Colley delivered a two-run single to left field and Reese Collier reached on an infield hit to drive in the 10th run.
 
Colley and Dreher each went 2-for-3 at the plate and combined to drive in five runs for Gardner-Webb while Forte batted in two. 
 
Miller (0-2) took the loss for the Paladins after allowing six earned runs on four hits and four walks over 2.1 innings. She was also charged with two wild pitches. Paladin pitching gave up only eight hits but allowed seven walks and uncorked three wild pitches in the loss.
 
Furman (0-5) continues its season-opening road trip Tuesday evening with a visit to No. 9 Clemson. First pitch at McWhorter Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
