GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker in non-conference play to the Dayton Flyers, Saturday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center.
Furman falls to 4-10 overall while Dayton improves to 8-6 on the season.
The Paladins struck first taking the doubles point after securing wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The teams traded the opening two matches with
Nicolas Dispas and
Nico Snyder, playing at No. 1, knocking off the 77
th-ranked tandem of Kyle McNally and Sturle Skigelstrand, 6-3. In the No. 3 match,
Alex Han and
Finn Pollard clinched the point with their 7-5 triumph over Andreas Nygaard and Eric Suk.
With the score tied at 3-all,
Walker Allen sent his No. 5 singles match versus Alfons Ridstrom into a tiebreaker set. Walker dropped the opening set, 6-4, before responding with a 6-4 triumph in the second. Ridstrom captured the contest after rallying back for a 7-5 win in the third.
Furman claimed a pair of singles wins from
Evan Duggal at No. 4 and
Landon Ecarma at No. 6. After the Flyers tied the match at 1-1, Ecarma put the Paladins back in front with his 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 against Kaia Mendibe. Dayton answered with back-to-back wins at No. 1 and No. 3 when Duggal, playing at No. 4, tied the match with a three-set triumph versus Dylan Jaen, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Furman steps back into Southern Conference play next Tuesday, March 17, traveling to Macon, Ga., for a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Mercer.
