GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Elon snapped Furman's five-match winning streak, 4-1, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Paladin freshmen Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren, who rank 34th nationally, defeated Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding, 6-4, at flight one doubles, before the Phoenix (8-3) rallied for victories at flights two and three to claim the opening point. Â
In singles, junior Macy Hitchcock posted a 6-2, 6-4 advantage over Lisa Kranec at flight four, but Elon scored at flights one, three, and five for the victory. The match at flight one went to a third set, with Cornelia Kack holding off Warren, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.Â
Matches at flights two and six were unfinished. Murphy won set one, 6-4, at flight two, before Bergeron answered with a 6-4 win of her own in set two. The third set was tied at 5-all. At flight six, freshman Molly Robinson recorded a 7-5 advantage in set one, then Nathalie Marinovitch took the second set, 6-4. Marinovitch led, 2-1, in the third set. Â
The Paladins (8-4) will open SoCon play against Western Carolina Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C.
