NORFOLK, VA. – Jules Mills scored the game-winning goal less than three minutes into overtime to lift the Old Dominion Monarchs to a 12-11 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team, Friday evening from L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
Furman drops 2-4 on the season while Old Dominion improves to 4-2 overall.
For the fifth consecutive game,
Shae Insinga scored three or more goals to lead the Paladins as the graduate transfer netted five to give her a team leading 23 for the campaign.
Reynolds Hester tied Insinga with five points on four assists and one goal.
Lily Toole scored four goals while
Emily Muir contributed one.
Skylar Hilmer won five draws and picked up a team high two ground balls.
Charlotte Kent caused two turnovers. In goal,
Madigan Brewer finished with six saves.
With her four goals in the contest, Toole becomes the fastest player in Furman history to accumulate 100 career points. The sophomore from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., currently has 76 goals and 24 assists through 24 career games.
Mills led the Monarchs with five goals and Natalie Calandra-Ryan contributed four points on two goals and two assists. Goalie Brynn Bowen totaled eight saves, five caused turnovers, and three ground balls.
Hester gave the Paladins a 9-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter and Toole later broke a 9-9 tie after her fourth goal of the contest with 7:38 remaining. Mills put Old Dominion ahead, 11-10, with 13 seconds remaining in regulation before Insinga sent the contest into overtime, scoring with just under one second left from Muir.
Both teams had a possession in overtime when Mills recorded the game-winning goal with 3:08 on the clock.
Furman built a 5-1 lead to begin the contest with Toole posting three of her four goals in the initial 17:03. Her third goal of the evening at the 12:57 mark of the second quarter extended the Paladins' lead to four. Old Dominion answered with three straight goals in the following five minutes. The teams exchanged the final two goals of the half, including Insinga's with four minutes left, and Furman held a 6-5 advantage at intermission.
The Paladins led 29-28 in shots while concluding the contest with 10 draws, nine ground balls, and six caused turnovers.
Furman will play three home games over the course of six days beginning next Thursday, March 12, hosting UMass Lowell at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
