#60 East Tennessee State Tops Furman, 5-2

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 60th-ranked East Tennessee State Buccaneers topped the Furman men's tennis team, 5-2, in Southern Conference action Monday afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center.

Furman drops to 7-14 overall and 3-3 in the SoCon. The win improves ETSU to 18-3 on the year and 6-0 in conference play.

For the eighth time in the past 10 matches, the Paladins secured the doubles point after capturing wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Buccaneers struck first with a win at No. 1 when Alex Han and Finn Pollard, playing at No. 3, won for the third time in four matches after defeating Juan Listo and James Sim, 6-3. The No. 2 tandem of Evan Duggal and Landon Ecarma held off Peter Kalocsai and Arenui Luethi in a tiebreaker, 7-6(2), to pick up the point and record their fourth straight victory and eighth of the season.

East Tennessee State responded by winning five of the six singles matches to collect the 5-2 victory. The Buccaneers earned wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6. Oscar Martinez registered a 6-3, 6-3 win against Nico Snyder at No. 1 before Theophile Joly, playing at No. 3, put Furman back in front with a straight set victory, his fourth of the year, versus Kalocsai, 6-4, 7-5. Evan Duggal was leading his No. 4 match over Kai Cowcher, 7-5, 2-2, before having to retire. Martin Vergara won at No. 2 against Nicolas Dispas, 6-3, 6-3, and Carlos Gonzalez captured the match for ETSU at No. 6 over Ecarma, 6-4, 6-4.

Walker Allen rallied back at No. 5 to send his match versus Luethi into the third set. Luethi got things started with a 6-4 win in the first set before Allen answered in the second with a 6-3 triumph. In the tiebreaking set, Luethi held off Allen by a 10-6 score to collect the victory.
