WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Furman senior Harris Barth (+1) is tied for 36th after Monday's opening round of the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional, which is being held this week at the par 71, 7013 yard Bermuda Run Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Barth, a three-time All-SoCon honoree, birdied his first hole then added a second birdie on No. 6 to run at 1-under. He birdied his final two holes of the day to finish with a 1-over 72. Ben James (-5) of Virginia, who ranks third nationally, and Pepperdine's Mahanth Chirravuri (-5), who ranks 11th nationally, are tied for the individual lead after each fired an opening-round 66.
On Tuesday, Barth will tee off of No. 1 at 9:42 a.m. and will play in a group with players from Navy and Little Rock.
No. 3 Virginia (-13) leads the regional by two strokes over 13th-ranked Pepperdine (+11). Four teams are tied for third place at 6-under.Â
Six 54-hole regional tournaments are being conducted around the country this week. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 29-June 3, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
