Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina netted three goals off corner kicks in the first half en route to a 4-0 victory over Furman in non-conference women's soccer action Sunday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Sydney Middaugh opened the scoring in the 10
th minute by running onto a headed pass down the right side and outracing the Paladin backline to the ball before finishing from the right side of the box. Maryn Wolf doubled the lead in the 16
th minute off a South Carolina corner kick that was headed across the face of goal from the far post. Wolf lunged to redirect the header into the right side of the net at 15:26.
The Gamecocks scored off a corner kick once again in the 29
th minute. Ava Tutas placed her set piece directly in front of net and Amanda Patrick rose to nod a shot past Paladin goalkeeper
Reese DeJong to extend the margin to 3-0. Reagan Schubach upped the South Carolina advantage to 4-0 in the 37
th minute. A Gamecock corner kick landed inside the six-yard box and Schubach poked the ball into the back of the net following a scramble in the box.
Christina Tsaosis and Emma Kirlin combined on the shutout for the Gamecocks while DeJong and
Kylie Brookfield each stopped two shots for the Paladins.
South Carolina (3-1-0) compiled a 24-2 edge on shots, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Gamecocks earned 10 corner kicks to just one for Furman.
The Paladins (1-2-0) return home to host Bob Jones for Freshmen Frenzy Night on Friday, August 28, on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium. Admission is free and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
