ELON, N.C. – The Furman men's tennis team got its fall season underway this past weekend participating at the Elon Invitational in Elon, N.C., which was hosted by Elon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Furman collected a total of 13 victories over the course of the three-day tournament including 10 in singles competition and three in doubles.
The Paladins were one of one of seven teams competing along with Elon, Charlotte, East Tennessee State, N.C. State, VCU, and Virginia Tech.
Furman sent four players to the Elon Invitational in
Landon Ecarma,
Evan Duggal,
Finn Pollard, and
Evan Rigsby.
The opening day saw the Paladins record five victories featuring three singles and two doubles. In doubles, Furman received wins from Duggal and Rigsby as well as Ecarma and Pollard. The duo of Duggal and Rigsby topped Jack Curtis and Nicholas Fisk of Elon, 6-3, and Ecarma and Pollard won, 7-5, over Elon's Nikola Parichkov and Charles Pilet.
In Friday's singles action, Ecarma earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Luke Forester of Elon. Pollard added a straight-set triumph versus East Tennessee State's Eduardo de Andreta, 6-3, 6-4. Rigsby contributed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jack DiMenna of Charlotte.
The Paladins recorded a total of six singles wins on Saturday including two each from Duggal and Pollard, and one by Ecarma and Rigsby. Pollard started with a three-set victory against Fisk, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and followed with a win versus Forester. Duggal defeated VCU's Leon Zaorski in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, and contributed a 6-1, 6-3 win against Marc Sala Pages of East Tennessee State. Rigsby posted a 6-1, 6-0 triumph versus Forester while Ecarma won against Fisk.
The final day saw Furman register one victory apiece in doubles and singles. Duggal and Rigsby began the day with a 7-5 win over Charlotte's William Freshwater and Emilio Sanchez. Pollard closed out the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 victory versus Pages.
The Paladins return to action September 25-26 at the CCU Battle at the Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C.
