Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team opened the 2004 season Friday at the East Carolina Invitational with a 3-1 loss to the Lamar Lady Cardional.
Four Lady Paladins recorded double digit kills, but 35 hitting errors, compared to Lamar's 18, put the match out of reach for Furman. Lamar won game one 30-27, but the Lady Paladins came back for a 30-27 win of their own in game two. Game three went Lamar's way 30-28, then the Lady Cardinal put the match away with a 30-16 game four decision.
Senior middle blocker Julia Fredrickson topped the Furman effort with 19 kills, a .533 hitting percentage, three aces, and three blocks, while freshman Chibuzo Aguocha added 13 kills and a .250 mark with 12 digs. Sophomores Whitney Purser and Ally Hock added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, but hit just .022 and .024 for the match. Junior setter Molly Rybak totaled 46 assists and 11 digs, while senior libero Rosey Cashman tallied a team-best 14 digs. Furman scored 6.0 total team blocks.
The Lady Cardinal of Lamar was led by Molli Abel's 18 kills and .389 attack percentage, and Ashley Halligan's 17 digs. Buchi Okoh added five total blocks, helping the Cardinal to 9.0 as a team.
Furman won't have time to make many adjustments between this match and the next. The Lady Paladins face the host ECU Pirates at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
