Furman Drops Season Opener To No.2 Florida 7-0

Gainseville, FL - The second-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team continued its early season success as the Gators improved to 2-0 with a 7-0 victory over Furman in Gainesville Friday afternoon. The loss drops Furman to 0-1 on the season.

Ryan Sweeting paired with senior Vladimir Obradovic on the top doubles court to defeat Furman's Greg Maarschalk and Ben Pauluhn, 8-2. Junior Janne Holmia and sophomore Greg Ouellette clinched the doubles point for the Gators with an 8-1 victory on court two over Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman. Furman picked up their only win of the day in the No.3 doubles slot with Scott Kahler and Will Kieffer downing Nestor Briceno and Stefan Tell 8-4.

Florida's 70th-ranked Stefan Tell made it a 2-0 advantage with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Ladyman in flight four. Ryan Sherry then downed Alex Doan 6-1, 6-4 showing at No.6. Sweeting held off Pauluhn at the top of the order in the first set, 7-5, before going on to win the second 6-0 to provide the clincher.

Chris Brandi also came away a straight set win with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Daniel Knause on court five to make it 5-0 in favor of the Gators. Ouellette and Holmia worked for their victories on courts two and three, respectively. Holmia defeated Maarschalk, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Ouellette got the win when Andy Juc retired due to injury (3-6, 6-3, 5-5 ret.).

The Paladins hit the road again on Sunday for a 10:00 AM match against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL.
