The 69th ranked Furman men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Elon Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. With the win Elon improved to 14-4, 7-1 in the Southern Conference, with the Paladins falling to 13-10, 4-1 in league play.
The Phoenix and the Paladins remain neck and neck behind league leader College of Charleston (16-2 overall, 6-0 SoCon) in the conference standings. The Cougars visit Furman next weekend.
Elon took two of the three doubles matches to earn an early 1-0 edge by
logging the doubles point. Sebastian Bredberg and Kevin Colin defeated Bo Ladyman and Brian Crook 8-5 at No. 2 before Anuwat Dalodom and Gustaf Asplund fell to Andy Juc and Scott Kahler 8-5 at No. 3. Then Elon's Austin Fenn and Damon Gooch downed Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarschalk 8-5 at No.1.
Andy Juc tied the score at 1-1 by beating Anuwat Dalodom 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Sebastian Bredberg gave the Phoenix the lead back at 2-1 after posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Greg Maarschalk at No. 3. The Paladins evened the count at 2-2 when Bo Ladyman ousted Gustaf Asplund 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4.
Austin Fenn's 6-3, 6-4 win over Daniel Knause at No.5 gave Elon the advantage for good. Kevin Beard clinched the match for the Phoenix with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Chris Gilli in flight six. Damon Gooch won the final match in flight one over Ben Pauluhn 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to make the final score 5-2.
Furman visits Davidson at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday before hosting The Citadel at 1 p.m. Saturday and College of Charleston at 1:30 p.m. next Sunday.
