Lauren Ross (8-16) limited Furman to only an unearned run on six hits in seven innings to lead Western Carolina to a 4-1 victory in game one of a three-game Southern Conference softball series Saturday afternoon at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Western Carolina upped its record to 16-33 overall and 6-13 in the league while Furman dropped to 20-27 overall and 7-9 in the SoCon.
Furman got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Kate Termini reached on a bunt single and moved to second as Lauren Ross' throw sailed into right field. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Termini scored on Bethany Ullrich's RBI grounder to second base.
Western Carolina rallied to take control in the bottom of the sixth. Lana Mackey walked the bases loaded and Jamie Swank hammered a two-out pitch off the top of the left-center field wall to triple and drive in three. The leadoff hitter scored on a wild pitch to extend the Catamount lead to 4-1.
Mackey suffered the loss to fall to 15-21 in the circle. The sophomore allowed four runs on five hits and four walks in six innings while fanning six batters.
Game two, scheduled for approximately 3:15 p.m., has been delayed due to lightning in the area.
