Box Score Greenville, S.C. – Senior Kevin Giltner scored 26 points to lead four Wofford players in double figures and the Terriers outscored Furman 44-30 in the second half to claim a 79-72 Southern Conference men's basketball victory over the Paladins on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 2,721 on YP.com Court at Timmons Arena.
With the loss, Furman slipped to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in SoCon play. Wofford upped its record to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in league play with its sixth victory in its last seven outings against the Paladins.
Furman shot 56% in the first half to build a 40-29 advantage before carrying a 42-35 lead into the locker room, but Wofford wasted little time closing the gap in the opening minutes of the second period. The Terriers opened the second half on a 12-3 run to grab a 47-45 lead on Giltner's triple with 15:46 to play. A David Brown trey and a pair of baskets from senior Brandon Sebirumbi helped Furman climb back into a 54-51 lead with 11:36 remaining, but Wofford reeled off 11 consecutive points as part of a 20-5 run to take control of the game.
Senior Brad Loesing ignited the run with back-to-back three-pointers and Giltner followed with a trey of his own to put Wofford ahead 60-54. Loesing finished with 12 points during the stretch as the Terriers opened up a 71-59 lead on Giltner's fourth triple of the night with 4:16 to play.
Giltner finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while connecting on 7-of-14 shots from the floor and all eight of his trips to the foul line. Loesing drained 11-of-13 free throw attempts to tally 21 points and Drew Crowell and Karl Cochran added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Wofford shot 51% from the field, made 8-of-13 three-point attempts and 21-of-25 free throw attempts, including all 12 in the second half. The Terriers also managed a 35-17 edge on the glass that included 15 offensive rebounds and 20 second-chance points.
Sebirumbi registered 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and Charlie Reddick added 14 points, four boards and five assists to lead the Paladins. Bryson Barnes contributed 10 points off of the bench to give Furman three players in double figures.
The Paladins shot 52.9% from the field and connected on 11-of-22 three-point attempts, but were just 7-of-11 from the charity stripe and did not attempt a free throw in the second half.
Wofford continues a three-game road trip on Thursday evening when it travels to face The Citadel. Furman faces College of Charleston on Thursday night at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C., before travelling to The Citadel on Saturday night.
