Furman Defeats Davidson, 5-2

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Furman men's tennis team swept the doubles matches and recorded four singles wins to defeat Davidson, 5-2, Wednesday at the Covington Tennis Courts in Davidson, N.C. 

The Paladins clinched the doubles point with wins in all three spots.  Sophomores Alex Christ and Joel Cook combined to defeat Calum Gee and Joe Shafer, 8-1, in the top match, then juniors Andrew Mellow and Tyler Droll topped Kevin Moore and Robert Lightbourn, 8-4, in the second-seeded match.  At number three doubles, freshmen Jacob Behal and Luke Synn tallied an 8-4 victory over Chris Mark and Connor Evins.

Mellow, ranked 122nd nationally, bested Schafer, 6-3, 6-0, at number one singles, while Christ notched a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, triumph over Nicky Kunz in the second singles match.  At number four, Robbie Aru came from behind to beat Lightbourn, 2-6,6-2, 7-5, and Droll rounded out the Paladin scorers with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Evins in the sixth-seeded match.

The Wildcats picked up two singles wins, as Mark defeated Cook, 6-0, 6-4, at number three singles, and Gee notched a 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Behal in the number four singles match-up.

Furman (6-12, 3-2 SoCon) returns home to face Elon Saturday at 1 p.m.
