Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – Tom Wood defeated junior Tyler Droll, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(8-6) at number six singles to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Wofford men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Furman Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in the regular season finale for both teams. The Paladins honored senior Watson George in his final home match on Saturday.
Furman won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point. Junior Andrew Mellow and Droll teamed up for an 8-6 victory over Stuart Robertson and Wood at number two doubles, then Terriers Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith combined to defeat sophomore Jacob Behal and George, 8-2, at number three to even the score. Furman sophomores Alex Christ and Joel Cook defeated Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway, 8-4, in the top match to secure the point.
Mellow topped Van Wyk, 6-1, 6-3 in the top singles match to put the Paladins ahead, 2-0, but Galloway notched a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Behal at number four to put Wofford on the board. Christ defeated Drew Superstein, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) at number two to give Furman a 3-1 advantage, but the Terriers came from behind, taking the final three matches for the win.
At number five singles, Heffron bested junior Robbie Aru, 6-4, 7-5, then Keith defeated Cook, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2) in the third-seeded match to set up the decisive contest at number six.
Furman (8-14-1, 5-4-1 SoCon) enters next weekend's Southern Conference Championship as the league's number five seed. The Paladins will face number four UNC Greensboro Friday at 10:30 p.m. to open the tournament. Final SoCon pairings will be released Sunday at the conclusion of all regular season matches.
Wofford improves to 6-11 overall and 5-5 in the SoCon with the win.
