Greenville, S.C. – In just the second game of its inaugural season, Furman fell to No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday, 19-3, in front of a record-setting crowd of 1,456 in Paladin Stadium. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 2 in the USILA Coaches Preseason Poll and No. 3 in the Warrior Media Preseason Poll, move to 1-0 on the season, while the Paladins fall to 0-2.
Kenny Meinsen, Chase Hancock and Ben Levin each scored a goal for the Paladins, while Graham Dabbs and Danny Dorsett added one assist each. Frazer Kinsley led Furman with 13 saves on the day.
North Carolina jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Shane Simpson and Spencer Parks, but the Paladins cut the Tar Heel lead to 2-1 on a Chase Hancock goal with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter. Then, three minutes later, Ben Levin scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at two.
The Tar Heels then scored twelve unanswered goals spanning three quarters, before Kenny Meinsen scored his second goal of the season to give the Paladins their final goal of the day and put the score at 14-3, North Carolina. The Tar Heels then scored five-straight goals to end the game and put the final score in the books at 19-3.
Fourteen different Tar Heels recorded a goal on Sunday, highlighted by Joey Sankey's hat trick. Spencer Parks, Brent Armstrong and T.J. Kemp each had two goals for North Carolina.
The Paladins are back in action next Saturday as they travel to Colorado to take on Air Force.
