Box Score Greenville, S.C. – Despite scoring a near season-high in goals, Furman lacrosse dropped its Atlantic Sun opener to High Point on Saturday, 15-7, in front of 379 fans in Paladin Stadium. With the win, High Point moves to a conference-leading 3-1 in A-Sun play (7-3 overall), while the Paladins fall to 0-1 in the Atlantic Sun and 0-9 overall.
Furman was led by freshman Matt Geran with two goals and Zach Coker with two assists. Graham Dabbs, Chase Hancock, Hil Blaze and J.J. McDaid each also added one goal, while Jake Gavin recorded 12 saves in goal.
Furman jumped out to an early lead on a Matt Geran goal from J.J. McDaid with 10:12 remaining in the first quarter. High Point answered with three goals to end the first, including two from conference-goal scoring leader Dan Lomas.
High Point continued their scoring to start the second quarter, making the score 4-1 with 12:31 remaining in the half. Geran then got his second goal of the day, this time from Zach Coker, to cut the Panther lead to 4-2 with 11:35 remaining. High Point again answered with three-straight goals to push their lead to 7-2 at halftime.
The Paladins came out quickly after halftime and Scott Primeau scored his second goal of the year with 13:38 remaining in the third quarter to cut the lead to 7-3. High Point responded with a goal by Tyler Cook to take an 8-3 lead, before Furman responded with a goal of their own, this time by Chase Hancock to cut the lead in half at 8-4 with 11:09 remaining in the quarter. High Point scored three unanswered goals before Furman got a goal from Graham Dabbs to cut the lead to 11-5 at the end of the third quarter.
The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, with the Paladins adding goals from J.J. McDaid and Hil Blaze to make the score 13-7 with 5:07 remaining. High Point then scored two unanswered goals to end the game and make the final score 15-7.
The Paladins return to the field on Saturday, April 5, as they host Richmond in Atlantic Sun action.
