CARY, N.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team competed this week at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships at the Cary Tennis Park in Durham, N.C. The tournament showcased the top men's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Furman junior Adam Steryous won three matches to reach the round of 16 in the singles main draw. Steryous beat Benjamin Kaczas of Gardner-Webb, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of 128 then defeated Gason Murray of UNCG, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 64. In third round action, he recorded a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Juan Estevarena of College of Charleston, then Steryous fell to North Carolina's Robert Kelly, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16.
Also in the singles main draw first round, senior Matt Browne beat N.C. State's Ian Dempster, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, and freshman Jake Munns notched a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brett Landau of UNC Asheville, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, sophomore Cameron Green and Steryous teamed up for four wins, reaching the semifinals. The Paladin duo beat Ollie Casey and Jack Maddocks of Appalachian State, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round, then tallied a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Javier Restrepo and Xander Veys of UNC Wilmington. Green and Steryous defeated Duke's Ryan Dickerson and Vincent Lin, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the round of 16, before knocking off top-ranked Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim of Wake Forest, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0(6) in the quarterfinals. The Paladin duo fell to Wake Forest's Romain Bogaerts and Maksim Kan, 5-7(7), 6-3, 1-0(6), in the semifinals.
Munns teamed with sophomore Josh Pistorius to beat East Carolina's Kasey Countee and Tendai Tapfuma, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round, while Brown and senior Ben Horst notched a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gaston Murray and Connor Thompson of UNCG, also in the first round of play.
Furman will compete at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh, N.C., October 23-25.
