Furman Falls At VCU, 67-45

Box Score

RICHMOND, VA. -- Ashley Pegram scored 11 of her game high 16 points in the second half to help VCU pull away to a 67-45 victory over Furman in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Siegel Center.

Pegram, a 5-foot-8 junior guard, drained 5-of-7 shots, including all three 3-pointers, and 3-of-4 free throws for her 16 points to help VCU improve to 4-1 on the season.

Furman, which saw its four-game winning streak halted in falling to 4-2 on the campaign, was paced by Holli Wilkins with 13 points and Cierra Carter with 10 points.

The Paladins were victimized on the boards as the Rams outrebounded Furman, 46-34, including 23-13 on the offensive glass, which helped deliver a 20-13 advantage in second chance points.

Furman trailed 17-13 after first period and was down 29-13 before Wilkins scored eight points over the final five minutes of the first half, part of an 11-2 Paladin run, to pull Furman to within 31-24 at intermission.

The third quarter, however, proved to be the Paladins' undoing as VCU used a 14-4 run over the period's first eight minutes to go up 45-30 following a pair of Pegram free throws at the 2:01 mark.  Pegram stretched the Rams' lead to 48-30 the next trip down the court with second trey of the contest.

Isis Thorpe contributed 14 points for the Rams, who connected on season best 7-of-18 3-pointers in the contest (38.5 percent) after entering the game converting just 28 percent from beyond the arc.

Camille Calhoun and Adaeze Alaeze topped VCU's rebounding effort with eight boards apiece.

Furman will play at Richmond on Tuesday in a 5:00 p.m. game.
