Box Score Greenville, S.C. – Behind a combined eight goals from Devon Horine and Britt Douglass, Furman women's lacrosse downed fellow first-year program Gardner-Webb, 15-4, in the Paladins' home opener. The win moves Furman to 2-0 in its inaugural season, while the loss drops the Runnin' Bulldogs to 0-2 in their first year.
Devon Horine turned in a season-high five goals, all in the first half, to lead the Paladins offensively, while Britt Douglass turned in her second hat trick of the young season, scoring three goals. Kristine Knowles and Ashley Trice each added two goals, while Paige Gamble, Katie Mauro and Gaby Susz added one each for the Paladins. Goalie Maggie Friel turned in six saves on the day and moved her record to 2-0 on the year.
Gardner-Webb was led by Amanda Steinmuller with two goals, while Emma Rose and Monique Martin added one apiece. Defender Lindsey Lippert caused five turnovers and goalie Raygan Hall recorded a team-high eight saves.
Furman opened the scoring early in the first half, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first 1:20 of the game. Three more Paladin goals pushed the lead to 6-0 just 6:50 into the game, before Gardner-Webb held the Paladins scoreless for the next eight minutes. A goal by Paige Gamble broke the scoring drought for Furman, then goals from Britt Douglass, Devon Horine and Gaby Susz pushed the Paladin lead to 10-0 with 10:30 remaining in the half. Monique Martin scored a goal for Gardner-Webb to cut into the Furman lead at 10-1, but the Paladins scored three more goals to push the lead to 13-1 heading in to halftime.
Neither team was able to get much done on offense in the second half, as the teams combined for a 17 minute scoring drought to open half number two. Gardner-Webb used an Amanda Steinmuller goal to cut the Furman lead to 13-2 with 12:07 remaining, before a goal by Katie Mauro pushed the lead back to 12 at 14-2. Consecutive goals by Gardner-Webb cut the Furman lead to 10 at 14-4, but Britt Douglass scored with 2:18 remaining to complete her hat trick and give Furman the 15-4 victory.
The Paladins are back in action on Friday, February 27, in Buies Creek, N.C., taking on Campbell at 3:00 p.m.
