Box Score Greenville, S.C. – Behind five goals from freshman Meg Lingo, Furman women's lacrosse downed Fresno State, 16-4, on Sunday morning inside Paladin Stadium. The win moves the Paladins to 4-0 in their inaugural season, while the loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-3.
Three of Lingo's five goals were scored in the second half and Britt Douglass added four second-half goals of her own for her third hat trick of the year. Paige Gamble added two goals of her own, as well as a team-high four draw controls. Ashley trice added two goals and goalie Maggie Friel notched five saves in her fourth win of the year.
Four different Bulldogs netted a goal, and Caroline Dineen-Carlson turned in a team-high four draw controls. Starting goalie Natalie Chaffin turned in a team-high four saves.
Fresno State took an early 2-0 lead just seven minutes into the game, but the Paladins used a free-position goal from Gamble to cut the lead to 2-1 with 19:41 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs pushed their lead back to two on a goal with 16:29 remaining, but the Paladins closed the first half on a 3-0 run, with two goals from Lingo and one from freshman Gaby Susz giving Furman the 4-3 halftime lead.
The Paladins came out on the attack in the second half, pushing the lead to 6-3 on goals by Gamble and Lingo just three minutes into the half. Fresno State then cut the lead to two with 17:11 remaining on a goal by Holly Cisneros. However, that would prove to be the Bulldogs' final goal of the day, as the Paladins closed the game on a 9-0 scoring run that included three free-position goals to win the game 15-4 and move to 4-0 in its inaugural season.
Furman is back in action on Saturday, March 7, traveling to Mt. St. Mary's for a 12:00 p.m. game.
