Women's Lacrosse Falls at Detroit in Regular Season Finale

Detroit, Mich. – Detroit used three-straight goals to open up a second-half lead that Furman could not overcome, and the Titans downed the Paladins, 9-6, on Saturday in both teams' regular-season finale. The loss drops Furman to 9-6 and 4-3 in Atlantic Sun play in its inaugural season and gives the Paladins the #4 seed in the Atlantic Sun tournament, while the win moves Detroit to 8-7, 5-2 in A-Sun play and clinches the #3 see in the A-Sun tournament for the Titans.

Ashley Trice led the Paladins with her fourth hat trick of the season, while Paige Gamble added two goals and two assists for a team-high four points. Britt Douglass and Devon Horine each netted a goal, while Horine led the team in draw controls with three and ground balls with five. Goalie Maggie Friel  turned in seven saves for the Paladins.

Jessica Snyder scored a game-high five goals to lead Detroit, while Kelsi Pritchard and Kylie Birney each added two goals. Ally Shrader picked up a team-high six ground balls, while Annie Mendoza won four draw controls.

Scoring was infrequent in the first half, with Detroit taking just a 2-0 lead nearly 18 minutes into the game, before Ashely Trice and Devon Horine scored back-to-back goals just 16 seconds apart to tie the game at two with 8:37 remaining in the half. The Titans then took a 3-2 lead on Snyder's second goal of the day, before Britt Douglass scored her 40th goal of the season with six seconds remaining in the half to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at three.

The teams traded goals to open the second half before Detroit used three-straight goals to open up an 8-5 lead with 9:35 remaining. Ashley Trice completed her hat trick with 6:00 to go to cut the lead to two, but Snyder netted her fifth goal with 2:24 remaining to push the Detroit lead back up to three at 9-6. Paige Gamble scored with 1:24 remaining to again cut the lead to two, but the Paladins couldn't overcome the Titans' lead, falling 9-7.

Furman is back in action next weekend at the Atlantic Sun Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. Times and pairings to be announced.
