Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Furman men's tennis team opened the 2016 season Saturday at with a 6-0 loss to No. 25 Vanderbilt at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.
In doubles play, Ryan Smith and Pen Binet of Vanderbilt downed sophomore Stefan Rhodes and freshman Alex Steryous, 7-5, at flight three, then the Paladins evened the slate as seniors Matt Browne and Ben Horst beat Baker Newman and Daniel Valent, 7-6, at flight two. In the decisive flight one match-up, Rhys Johnson and Cameron Klinger topped sophomore Cameron Green and junior Adam Steryous, 7-6, to clinch the opening point.
The Commodores swept the singles matches, as 64th-ranked Valent defeated Adam Steryous, 6-1, 6-2 in the top-seeded match-up, and Johnson scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Browne at flight two. In the number three match, Clinger beat Green, 6-0, 7-6, and Newman defeated Horst, 6-1, 6-1, at flight four. Kris Yee notched a 6-2, 6-3 win versus sophomore Josh Pistorius at number five, and Smith completed the sweep with a 7-5 win over Alex Steryous at flight six.
Furman (0-1) is back in action on Sunday when the Paladins travel to Georgia State. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
