Bunn, Wilkins Lead Furman Past UNCG, 75-59

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Whitney Bunn and Holli Wilkins combined to score 45 points to power Furman to a 75-59 victory over UNCG in Southern Conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Fleming Gymnasium.

The triumph, the third straight for Furman (11-9, 4-1 SoCon) — all on the road — and fifth consecutive win over UNCG (8-13, 0-6 SoCon), moved the Paladins into a first place tie in the SoCon with Samford and Mercer.  Furman returns home to face the Bulldogs next Thursday in an 11:00 a.m. Education Day showdown at Timmons Arena and will entertain the Bears on Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. contest.

Bunn capped Furman's impressive three-game road stretch with a game high 25 points, connecting on 9-of-15 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, and draining 5-of-7 free throws.  Wilkins followed with 20 points, going 8-of-18 from the field, 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and a perfect 2-of-2 from the line while also matching her career high nine rebounds.

Bunn's 25-point performance gave her 999 points in her career.  The junior All-SoCon point guard is in line to become the 22nd player in program history to reach 1,000 points.  She also had five rebounds, and her four assists versus UNCG upper her career total to 400, which ranks third all-time at Furman.

The Paladins, who shot 43.1 percent from the field (28-of-65) and found the mark on 6-of-19 3-pointers (31.6%), did their best work on the boards, getting a game high 12 caroms from Cierra Carter en route to a 41-33 advantage — their first positive rebounding effort in the last six games and first carom decision over a Division I foe since earning a road win over Richmond on Dec. 1.

UNCG was paced by Lucy Mason's 21 points.

Wilkins' first basket of the game broke a 2-2 tie and put Furman ahead for good, helping the Paladins grab a 20-10 lead after one quarter.

Bunn's three-point play with a minute to go in the first half and 3-pointer in the final second sent Furman into intermission with a 41-25 advantage.

The Paladins put the game on ice in the third quarter, closing the period with an 11-0 spurt, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Bunn and Wilkins, for a 62-39 lead.

Wilkins gave Furman its largest lead of the game, 64-39, with the first basket of the fourth quarter.

Notes: In the Paladins' current three-game winning streak, Whitney Bunn has averaged 28.0 points, shot 66.7 percent from the field (30x45), 52.9 percent from 3-point range (9x17), averaged 5.7 rebounds per game, tallied 13 assists, and recorded five steals.
