Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – Strong singles play led the Furman men's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over UNC Asheville Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Bulldogs clinched the opening point after winning two of three doubles matches. Alex Croker and Brett Landau teamed up for a 6-4 win over seniors Ben Horst and Matt Browne at flight one, then Paladin sophomore Cameron Green and junior Adam Steryousnotched a 6-2 victory versus Henry Patten and Josh Swindler at flight two, setting up a decisive flight-three showdown. Thomas Orestit-Pano and Reid Dillon beat sophomore Stefan Rhodes and rookie Alex Steryous, 7-5, for the point.
The Paladins swept the singles matches for the win. Adam Steryous posted a 7-6, 6-0 advantage against Orestis-Pano in the top-flighted match, and Browne handed Croker a 6-3, 6-3 loss at flight two. In the number three contest, Green held on for a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 win over Patten, and Horst downed Swindler, 6-4, 7-6, at flight four.
Furman won tiebreakers for the final two points. Sophomore Josh Pistorius continued the sweep, coming from behind for a 6-7, 6-2, 1-0(10-2) victory over Landau at flight five, and Alex Steryous posted a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(10-7) win versus Olly Cull at number six.
Furman (3-3) will play at Florida Saturday at 2 p.m.
