Box Score SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – UC Irvine slipped past Furman, 4-3, Sunday in San Diego, Calif.
The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to take the opening point. Seniors Ben Horst and Matt Browne teamed up to beat Jonathan Poon and Justin Agbayani, 6-1, in the top-seeded contest, and sophomore Cameron Green and junior Adam Steryous downed Tyler Pham and Jonathan Hammell, 6-4, at flight two. The third-seeded match-up was unfinished.
The Anteaters scored four singles points for the win. Luca Marquard defeated Browne, 6-2, 6-2, at flight two, and Hammel recorded a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 advantage over Horst in the number four match. At flight five, Agbayani topped sophomore Josh Pistorius, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, and Vatsal Bajpai bested rookie Alex Steryous, 6-4, 6-3, at flight six.
Furman captured two singles points, as Adam Steryous handed Sebastian Heim a 6-2, 6-0 loss in the flight one match-up, and Green held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Pham at flight three.
The Paladins (4-7) will face Gonzaga on March 8 in San Diego to continue the team's Spring Break road trip.
