Box Score Greenville, S.C. – Furman used a seven-goal second period to down Jacksonville on Saturday, 13-7, for its second-straight win. The victory moves the Paladins to 2-7 on the year and 2-1 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Dolphins to 2-7 and 0-3 in SoCon play.
Finn Barry and Stephen Wierzbicki each collected a hat trick for the Paladins, while David Williamson added two goals and five other Paladins chipped in one. Jonah Moore added a team-high two assists, while Myles Cohen picked up a game-high five ground balls. Reilly McDermott added nine saves for the Paladins and picked up his second win on the season.
Jacksonville opened the game with back-to-back goals before Wierzbicki netted his first goal of the day on an assist from Jonah Moore to cut the lead to 2-1 with 4:40 to go in the first period. The Dolphins pushed the lead back to two on a goal with six seconds left in the first period, then grabbed their largest lead of the day at three on a goal from Mitchell Parker with 14:43 to go in the second period.
Furman responded in a big way, rattling off four-straight goals, including two by Wierzbicki, to take a 5-4 lead on a goal from David Williamson with 3:51 remaining in the period. Jacksonville used a goal from Eric Applegate to tie the game at five, but Furman again responded with three-straight goals, including a goal by Zach Scott with four seconds remaining in the half, to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
David Williamson netted the only goal of the third period, to push Furman's lead to 9-5, before Finn Barry scored his first goal of the day to double-up the Dolphins, 10-5, with 12:47 to go in the fourth. Jacksonville cut into Furman's lead with 12:29 remaining, but the Paladins used three-straight goals, including two by Barry, to push the lead to 13-6 with 5:00 remaining. Jacksonville used a man-down goal to cut the lead to six with 4:02 to go, but the Paladins buckled down on defense to hold on for the 13-7 win.
Furman is back in action Saturday, April 9, hosting Richmond in a key 12:00 SoCon matchup.
