Furman Falls at Bellarmine in Regular Season Finale

Louisville, Ky. – William Holcomb scored four goals, but it wasn't enough, as Bellarmine downed Furman men's lacrosse, 15-8, on Saturday in the regular season finale. The loss eliminates Furman from the SoCon Tournament and ends the Paladins' season at 2-11, 2-5 in SoCon play, while the win moves Bellarmine to 6-8 and 4-3 in SoCon play and sends the Knights to the SoCon tournament.

Holcomb led the Paladins with four goals, while Zach Scott, Stephen Wierzbicki, Chase Hancock, and Jon Vandenberg each added one. Holcomb, Scott, and Wierzbicki each added an assist, while Reilly McDermott made six saves.

Chase Hancock gave the Paladins an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal, but Bellarmine responded with four-straight scores over the next six minutes to take a 4-1 lead. William Holcomb netted his 10th goal of the year with 4:10 to go in the first to cut the lead in half at 4-2, but Bellarmine used an unassisted goal to push the lead to 5-2 after one.

The Paladins got a goal from Zach Scott to cut the lead to 5-3 one minute into the second period, but the Knights responded with a goal of their own to push the lead back to 6-3 with 13:33 remaining in the half. William Holcomb then netted his second goal of the day to cut the lead to 6-4 heading into halftime.

Bellarmine used a 3-0 third period to push the lead to 9-4 and seemingly put the game out of reach for the Paladins, who opened the fourth with an unassisted goal by Holcomb to cut the lead to 9-5. Bellarmine and Furman then traded goals before Bellarmine rattled off four-straight to push the lead to 14-6 with 3:40 to go. Jon Vandenberg netted his third goal of the year to cut the lead in half at 14-7, before the teams traded goals again to give the Knights the 15-8 victory.
