Women's Lacrosse Falls at No. 10 Duke

Durham, N.C. – Catherine Cordrey scored four goals and No. 10 Duke downed Furman, 20-5, on Friday afternoon in the Paladins' season opener. The win moves the Blue Devils to 2-0 on the season, while the loss drops Furman to 0-1. 

Ashley Trice, Abby Shields, Paige Gamble, Isabelle Walsh, and Sophie Brennan each netted a goal for the Paladins, while Shields added an assist and Devon Horine added two assists. Maggie Friel and Courtney Baker split time in goal, with Friel making six saves and Baker notching two.

Duke took an early 2-0 lead just under a minute into the game, but Furman responded with a goal by Ashley Trice on an assist from Devon Horine to cut the Blue Devils' lead in half at 2-1 with 24:52 remaining in the half. Duke pushed the lead to three at 4-1, but Abby Shields found Sophie Brennan for her first goal of the season to again cut the lead in half at 4-2. Duke then ended the half on a 9-0 run to take a 13-2 lead into the halftime locker rooms.

The Blue Devils continued to add to the lead out of the half, pushing it to 19-2 before Furman got a goal from Paige Gamble, her first of the season, to cut the lead to 19-3. Duke scored with 9:46 remaining to push the lead to 20-3, before Furman ended the game with back-to-back goals by Isabelle Walsh and Abby Shields, making the final score 20-5.

Furman is back in action on February 22, as the Paladins play host to Presbyterian College in the 2017 home opener.
